WINTERTREE MORNING
It’s a spartan life as a wintertree,
weightless rain both companion and gift,
and greater intimacy an extravagance
balanced against a distant awareness
of those who would claim me now --
and the next one of us, and the one after that.
I wait on light’s arrival, retaining stillness,
mostly wishing the thinness
of a blanket sun was as firmer, as promised.
All sorts of decisions are backlit between
an uncertain valley daybreak
and the laying down of a quiet dusk.
