Krishnokoli

A translation of RabindranathTagore’s Krishnakoli Ami Tarei Boli by Rupa Chakravarti from Bengali to English

Rabindranath Tagore

Krishnokoli

I call her Krishnokoli, the village folk simply call her dark-skinned.

One cloudy morning I saw her on the meadow, the dark doe eyes of the dark-skinned girl

Head uncovered, long unplaited hair hanging down her back

Dark? However dark-skinned she be, I have seen her dark doe-eyes

.

The day slowly faded under dark clouds, two dark cows were lowing

So, with anxious steps, the dark girl hurried out of her hut

Looked at the sky raising her eyebrows, listened to the rumbling thunder.

Dark? However dark-skinned she be, I have seen her dark doe-eyes

.

The East wind gusted in, sent waves dancing through the rice field.

I stood alone at a corner of the meadow, there was no one else in the field

Did she look at me? Only I know and the dark girl knows.

Dark? However dark-skinned she be, I have seen her dark doe-eyes

.

In May dark kohl clouds gather in the northeastern corner of the sky.

Soft dark shadows descend on the tamal* grove in June.

On an August monsoon night, my heart suddenly fills with joy.

Dark? However dark-skinned she be, I have seen her dark doe-eyes

.

I call her Krishnokoli, despite whatever she is called by villagers.

I saw her in the Moynapara meadow, the dark doe-eyes of the dark-skinned girl.

She did not raise her sari to cover her head, she did not have time to be shy

Dark? However dark-skinned she be, I have seen her dark doe-eyes.
